BREAKING NEWS: ZIM ELECTIONS RESULTS MORE

18:45PM - MDC-T secretary general Tendai Biti says he "survived" in Harare East but says "there is no chance I will be in government under any leader other than Morgan Tsvangirai", he tells the UK Independent newspaper's David Smith. He adds: "The good work we've done in the last four-and-half years in rebuilding the economy is going to be reversed in seconds."

18:42PM - David Coltart, defeated in Bulawayo East by 19 votes, surveys the MDC's defeat and concedes that it is "obviouslty catastrophic, there's no point putting a gloss on it." But he claims that "Zimbabwe has been subjected to electoral fraud on a massive scale."

17:40PM - Zanu PF's Saviour Kasukuwere rejects Morgan Tsvangirai's claims of vote fraud as "nonsense". Pointing to the loss of key seats, including Professor Jonathan Moyo's Tsholotsho North, he asks:"Would we rig ourselves? He's talking absolute nonsense."

Kasukuwere says President Robert Mugabe and Zanu PF heading for a crushing victory. "It's a landslide, a total annihilation of the MDC. Their project has failed."

17:26 - Professor Jonathan Moyo (Zanu PF) has lost the Tsholotsho North seat to the MDC-T by slightly over 300 seats, according to several sources.

17:00PM - Roy Bennett, the exiled treasurer of Morgan Tsvangirai's MDC-T party, calls for campaign of passive resistance as he accuses Zanu PF of "stealing" the election. "Don't pay bills, don't attend work, just bring the country to a standstill."

Last night, he used his Twitter account [@RoyPachedu] to predict a victory for his party. He said: "I'm hearing good things all round, cannot believe they can even rig this. If they steal it again, we will not sit on our hands. Never!!"

16:15PM - MDC-T national chairman Lovemore Moyo has lost Matobo North seat to Zanu PF by 81 votes, according to several sources.

16:05PM - A source close to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission says all results should be ready by mid-day on Friday. Official results could start being announced tonight.

14:25PM - Our correspondent at the Welshman Ncube led MDC election HQ in Bulawayo has caught up with Paul Themba Nyathi, who declares that he has lost in Gwanda North to Zanu PF.

Nyathi is critical of Morgan Tsvangirai’s stance that election “null and void”. He suggests Zanu PF has won fair and square.

He says: “Five days ago, I got a feeling that Gwanda North was unwinnable. People who used to come to our rallies and support us suddenly couldn’t look me in the eye. They started vacillating.

“We had a free and fair contest, everyone was free to canvass and the vote was peaceful. Hand on heart, I think Zanu PF beat us fair and square. There’s something that made people to fall in love with Zanu PF again, and it’s not intimidation.

“I think Morgan Tsvangirai has spoken too soon, he needs a quiet corner to reflect and I think the right course is to concede and move on.”

12PM - Morgan Tsvangirai speaks to reporters, says “election has been a huge farce. Its credibility has been marred by administrative and legal violations which affect the legitimacy of its outcome.”

He cites “two critical issues” – he says the vote does not meet SADC Guidelines on elections and points to Zanu PF’s failure to “implement SADC reforms” including licensing of TV stations and reform of the country’s security services (police and army).

His concerns include:

1.1 Voters’ Roll
# Thousands failed to register and were disenfranchised
# Not delivered timeously as required by law
# No proper inspection of the voters’ roll to verify authenticity
# Duplication of names on the voters roll
# Unauthorised movement of voters from their wards (leading to almost 40% voters being turned away and disenfranchised)
1.2 Manipulation of voters’ choice - Voters forced to plead illiteracy and resort to “assistance”.
1.3 Use of traditional leaders (chiefs and headmen) to intimidate voters.
1.4 Unauthorised voter migration - Voters bussed into constituencies to vote eg Harare South, Epworth
1.5 Unaccounted for voters especially in farming areas
1.6 Abuse of the facility to use Voter Registration Slips as proof of registration
1.7 Militarisation of the electoral process – electoral processes under the effective control of security personnel
1.8 Lack of transparency in the printing of ballots
a.) non-compliance with section 51 of the Electoral Act.
b.) over-printing of ballots (more than 35%) and lack of accountability for ballots.
1.9 Lack of transparency and double-voting in the use of the
Special Vote
1.10 Lack of transparency in the use of the Postal Voting system

Tsvangirai says he has met the head of the African Union observer mission, the former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and told him that “this is not a credible election. It does not reflect the will of the people of Zimbabwe.”

He adds: “For the above reasons, the election has been heavily manipulated. In our view, the outcome of this election is illegitimate. But more importantly, the shoddy manner in which it has been conducted and the consequent illegitimacy of the result will plunge this country into a serious crisis.”

He finishes by asking the “SADC and the AU audit teams to look into this process, in particular the voters roll, the ballots and the manner in which the whole process was conducted”, adding: “In our view this election does not meet the SADC, AU and international standards for a credible, legitimate, free and fair election.”

11:45AM – The Electoral Commission Forum of SADC (not to be mistaken with the main SADC observer mission) says election was “credible, free and fair and we urge that the result should be accepted”. Addressing concerns about the voters’ roll, it adds: “No country has a perfect voters roll.”

11:45AM – The Catholic Commission of Justice and Peace praises “peaceful environment” in Zimbabwe and “positive achievements” in conduct of elections.

11.45AM – The BBC’s Andrew Harding in Harare says he has spoken to a Nigerian observer for the African Union who praised “free, peaceful, very good” vote in Bindura. “Nobody was turned away,” he is quoted as saying.

11:45 – The Zimbabwe Electoral Support Network (ZESN), an NGO, calls a news conference where it raises allegations of irregularities in the conduct of the election. It had 7,000 observers throughout the country. It claims that the election “seriously compromised”, adding: “These factors fundamentally undermine the degree to which results of election reflect the will of the people of Zimbabwe.”

11:45AM – The world’s news media starts reporting, citing a Zanu PF source, that President Robert Mugabe has won the presidential race by a landslide.

11.30AM – A source at Zanu PF election HQ says Goodwills Masimirembwa, who campaign heavily in Mabvuku-Tafara (Harare) has lost. The MDC-T will retain that seat.

# In Bulawayo, David Coltart (MDC) said to lose the closely-fought Bulawayo East race to incumbent Thabitha Khumalo (MDC-T) by 19 votes.

# In Mashonaland West, Zanu PF projected to win 21 out of 22 seats; in Masvingo the Zanu PF rebel Munyaradzi Kereke said to be coming strong as an independent and Zanu PF projected to win 22 or the 23 seats ; in Mashonaland Central, Zanu PF is projected to reclaim the two seats it lost in 2008 for a total wipe-out of 22 out of 22; in Bulawayo, the MDC-T is seen winning all 12 seats as they did in 2008; in Manicaland, Zanu PF is projected to reclaim 20 seats to claim a share of 22 out of 26; in the Midlands Zanu PF appears to be edging to between 23-25 of the 28 contested seats; in Harare Zanu PF is set to improve on its one MP with a projected share of eight out of 29 seats with the MDC-T getting the rest. In Mashonaland East Zanu PF is seen winning 22 out of 23 seats; in Matabeleland South Zanu PF is projected to win 12 of the 13 seats on offer while in Matabeleland North they are seen winning between 8-9 of the 12 constituencies.

11AM: In Harare, MDC-T heavyweights Theresa Makone, Jameson Timba and the former ZBC DJ Eric Knight said to be struggling. The party’s secretary general Tendai Biti, carrying an advantage of 6,000 from the 2008 elections, suddenly finds himself under a serious challenge as well as Gift Chimanikire and Tapiwa Mashakada.

9AM – Polling stations begin posting results outside. At least 15 polling stations out of around 50 visited by our correspondent in Tsholotsho North show the incumbent Jonathan Moyo may be in trouble. He could still turn it around.

8AM – Voting continuing throughout the country. Early indications point to a strong Zanu PF showing in Manicaland, Masvingo, Midlands, Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland West, Mashonaland East, Matabeleland South and Matabeleland North. Only Bulawayo and Harare look promising for MDC-T.

At the Welshman Ncube-led MDC election command centre in Bulawayo, activists resigned to taking heavy losses.

AS THE BUBBLE BURSTS IN THE PEOPLE`S REPUBLIC!!!

History has an uncanny tendency of repeating itself and each time it replicates, its lessons are ruthlessly unforgiving. International economists warn that the world is on the threshold of yet another devastating global economic and financial crisis equal and possibly greater than the 2007 recession at a time when neo-liberal economics’ decades-old fundamental flaws are ripping apart humanity’s socio-economic fabric. The London Academy has since summed up the neo-liberal economics’ failures to, for the past 30 years, foresee recessions that included the 2007 global crisis.

“…the failure to foresee the timing, extent and severity of the (2007) crisis and to head it off, while it had many causes, was principally a failure of the collective imagination of many bright people, both in this country and internationally, to understand the risks to the system as a whole,” said the academy in a letter to Great Britain’s Queen Elizabeth after she asked why the world failed to see the crisis coming. Despite tell-tale signs of yet another impending disaster the world, however, appears content with listening to listen to the neo-liberal economics’ hypnotic mantra of hope although the collapsing Greek economy, which is grappling with a joblessness rate of nearly 30 percent, provides clear evidence that the cookie is crumbling yet again. Greece has been asked to retrench 25 000 government workers as part of austerity measures for it to receive financial bailout from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund. Other Mediterranean nations such as Portugal, Italy and Spain are also not far from Greece’s predicament.

Signs of yet another global meltdown are real and abundant. Detroit, one of the United States’ largest cities and once the world’s automobile industry centre, has filed for bankruptcy after being weighed down by a US$18 billion debt. More than 80 000 buildings in Detroit now stand empty after being abandoned.

However, most ominous is the real prospect of the collapse of the Chinese economy. The world’s fastest growing economy that is eyeing a double digit growth within the next decade has actually been in decline, in real terms, over the past decade, economists have observed. A 60-minute exposé on China’s unsustainably incredible fast growth, which was posted on YouTube early this month by Australia’s Unconditional Economist, exposes China’s slow growth because the country’s massive new cities are not being occupied.

The ghost cities are a major pointer to a country that is fast driving itself and the world towards a serious crisis. Despite the fact that China’s phenomenal growth effectively shielded Australia from the 2007 global financial crisis because Australia was, at the time of the crisis, busy enjoying brisk business supplying mineral resources such as steel to prop up the Asian giant’s urban development drive, this time around another global crisis will not spare the land of the Kangaroos. “Vast new mega-cities bigger than London or New York are shooting up all over the country at a rate of 20 a year. But there are disturbing signs that the bubble is about to burst. Take a visit to some of these mega-cities and you’ll find them bizarrely empty. Brand new, shiny, ghost towns,” the Unconditional Economist observed.

China hopes that 350 million of its 1,3 billion people will move into the white elephants during the next decade in what has been described as the world’s largest mass rural-urban human migration in history. But because of generally high unemployment and poor wages in the country, the people are yet to start entering the mega-cities. An Australian company contracted to design the mega metropolitans said the Chinese are literally constructing the cities faster than they are being designed. One 30-storey hotel building was, for example, said to have been completed in an incredible record two weeks. China’s supersonic growth is graphically demonstrated by its latest bullet train that effortlessly achieves speeds of more than 300km/hr. If placed on the Harare-Bulawayo track it can complete the 430km distance in 1 hour 25 minutes, approximately 40 minutes behind an air flight to the city. But even more disturbing is that the BRICS wall could tumble incredibly. BRICS, the acronym for the so-called emerging markets that comprise Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, is a group of countries whose growth is currently riding on China’s extraordinary development. For instance Brazil is the largest exporter of chicken in the world with China being the biggest market for Brazilian chicken.

If China suffers the price of chicken will go down dramatically at a time when, according to the Latin American country’s 2010 statistics, commodity exports now contribute 14 percent to the country’s gross domestic product compared to six percent in 1990. Brazil’s exports topped US$256 billion in 2010. “If China suffers its first series of capitalist crisis introduced by the bursting of several bubbles that include that in the real estate sector, the rest of the world is going to be affected in many ways,” says Mexican economist Alejandro Nadal, adding: “There will be a financial shock all over the world and the interdependences that had been created over the past 15 years are very strong and form a tightly knit tissue so whatever happens in China will affect financial markets all over the world. China, already the second largest economy, is the largest owner of reserves denominated in United States dollars so that will also bring an impact on the world economy but especially on the US economy.” For Africa, where China-Africa trade surpassed the US$160 billion mark in 2011, a troubled Chinese economy would be devastating. “With many southern African countries relying on exports of raw materials to China this (China economic recession) will cause immense problems,” Lorenzo Fioramonti, an economist with Pretoria University believes. Effects on the Zimbabwean economy are too ghastly to contemplate. The country, after crossing swords with its traditional western economic partners in 2000 because of its controversial land reform programme, decided to look east, chiefly to China.

 
While looking east the country’s currency was crashed out of circulation in early 2009 due to hyperinflation, forcing the southern African nation to also look back west as it dollarized its economy which resulted in it adopting mainly the US dollar as its main mode of exchange. In a nutshell, although the talk of a recreation of a local currency makes Zimbabweans develop goose pimples, Zimbabwe lost its sovereignty in 2009 when it dollarized and the country is living dangerously without its own currency as the Chinese bubble nears bursting point. Today, the biggest chunk of Zimbabwe’s trade deficit is a result of the country’s insatiable appetite for imports that are mostly emanating from the Asian market, especially China. In return, China is getting an undisclosed amount of raw minerals that include diamonds and gold. For the first four months of the year Zimbabwe’s trade deficit stood at US$1,6 billion after the country imported US$2,62 billion worth of goods against US$1,02 billion in exports. In 2012, Zimbabwe’s balance of payments stood at US$3,6 billion after importing US$7,48 billion worth of goods against US$3,88 billion worth of exports.

MALEMA URGES ZIMBABWEANS TO VOTE FOR MUGABE, SAD INDIVIDUAL!

THE newly-formed South African political party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), on Tuesday called on Zimbabweans to vote for Zanu PF in Wednesday's general elections to protect the gains of the war of liberation. The EFF party is led by former ANC youth league leader Julius Malema.

“The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) calls upon the revolutionary people of Zimbabwe to defend the Zimbabwean revolution by voting for Zanu-PF and retaining Comrade Robert Mugabe as the President of that liberated nation,” the party said in a statement.

“The gains of the Zimbabwean revolution must be defended. These gains find concrete expression in the historic and unparalleled land redistribution programme that took land from 4,000 white settler farmers who owned 80 percent of Zimbabwean land, and redistributed it to more than 274,000 Zimbabweans! It is your victory. Defend it by any means necessary!”

The EFF saluted Zimbabweans for enduring and surviving sanctions imposed by the West.

 

“The people of Zimbabwe have been punished as a strategy to separate the people from the revolutionary leadership of Zanu PF and leadership of President Mugabe. We say do not allow the schemes of the enemies of Africa to succeed. Vote for liberation! Vote Zanu-PF!

“We implore the people of Zimbabwe to realize that the Zimbabwean revolution is still under massive attacks and new plots are being hatched and new schemes cooked to reverse the gains you have made. The demonization of Zanu PF and Comrade Mugabe is part of the plot to divide the nation for re-colonisation."

The EFF also called on Zanu PF to continue implementing the indigenization programme in order to complete the economic emancipation of the black majority. Continued the statement: “We say you have already suffered enough for your liberation now; defend and deepen it; only Zanu-PF has demonstrated beyond doubt that it has the foresight, courage and never-die spirit as warriors for African dignity. We warn the people of Zimbabwe not to hand over your country to the stooges of the West in the form of Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC-T.

“Zimbabwe has its land back. We in South Africa draw courage and inspiration from your achievements. In South Africa we remain landless, poor and under attack from racism every single day of our existence. Our freedom is empty words. We note with joy the indigenization programme which now extends decolonization of the economy through ownership of the economy by Zimbabweans.

“We call on the Zimbabwean people to defend, deepen and fast track the indigenisation programme to complete this second and most difficult phase of your glorious revolution. You know who your true leaders are! You know which party can and has stood against Western arrogance and has emerged victorious. President Robert Mugabe is fighting his seventh election since 1980 against the two MDC parties led by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and Welshman Ncube.

THERE IS GROWING DANGER THAT SOUTH AFRICA ENDS LIKE ZIMBABWE!!

South Africa`s economy is firing from all cylinders, I could also not help but wonder at the disparities between South Africa’s richest and poorest citizens. According to that country’s human development figures, five percent of South Africa’s mainly white population controls 80 percent of that country’s land and economic resources. Such a frightening statistic left me questioning the wisdom behind the creation of such a massively advanced economy that forgets to take on board the majority of its citizens. South Africa is a classic example of a country that has failed to address racial, gender, ethnic and class dimensions of poverty.

There has been no systematic transformation of economic structures and the typical enclave economy still persists today.  South Africa’s phenomenal opulence that is typical of the so-called first world is beginning to cause ructions in the country. The Marikana miners’ strike of August last year immediately comes to mind. The job action attracted international attention following a series of violent incidents between the South African Police Service, Lonmin security, the leadership of the National Union of Mineworkers and strikers themselves which resulted in the deaths of 44 people. At least 78 additional workers were also injured. Even though largely discredited, the likes of Julius Malema are beginning to garner support as they question the country’s economic justice system that has, for example, allowed the construction of massive stadiums, airports and highways when its public health delivery system cannot even afford to offer decent facilities to cater for the majority of its citizens.

Malema, who was expelled from the ruling African National Congress for his radicalism and went on to launch his own political party, the Economic Freedom Fighters, whose future in South African politics is still unclear, has mocked the country’s public health system as having failed to offer service to its revered anti-apartheid fighter, Nelson Mandela, who is currently being treated at the privately-owned Medi-Clinic Heart Hospital in Pretoria for a recurring lung infection. The country’s paradoxical economic growth in a largely impoverished nation is also highlighted by its enormous housing challenges and rising unemployment.

On the question of racial discrimination,  to those who will learn, this further lesson: That until the philosophy which holds one race superior and another inferior is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned in Harare.  That until there are no longer first-class and second class citizens of any nation; That until the color of a man’s skin is of no more significance than the color of his eyes; That until the basic human rights are equally guaranteed to all without regard to race; That until that day, the dream of lasting peace and world citizenship and the rule of international morality will remain but a fleeting illusion, to be pursued but never attained; And until the ignoble and unhappy ZANU PF  that hold our brothers in Zimbabwe in subhuman bondage have been toppled and destroyed; Until bigotry and prejudice and Mugabe`s malicious and inhuman self-interest have been replaced by understanding and tolerance and good-will in Zimbabawe.  Until all Zimbabweans stand and speak as free beings, equal in the eyes of all men, as they are in the eyes of Heaven; Until that day, the African continent will not know peace. There are women who, though buried in the country, are yet most careful about their hair. Even if rugged Athos should hide them from view, they would dress well-for Athos. They even take a pleasure in dressing to please themselves, and every young girl loves to make the most of her attractions. The bird of Juno, when his plumage is praised, spreads out his tail to be admired, and dumb though he be, is proud of his beauty. To kindle in us the fires of love, dress is more potent than the dread arts of the magician. Trust not to herbs, nor to philtres compounded of divers juices, and essay not the flux of the mare on heat. Serpents are not cut in two by the incantations of the Marsians; and rivers no longer flow backwards to their sources. You may bang the brass of Temesa as much as you will, it will never bring down the moon to earth.

Your first preoccupation, my dears, should be your manners. When a woman's manners are good, she never fails to attract. Manners indeed are more than half the battle. Time will lay waste your beauty, and your pretty face will be lined with wrinkles. The day will come when you will be sorry you looked at yourself in the mirror, and regret for your vanished beauty will bring you still more wrinkles. But a good disposition is a virtue in itself, and it is lasting; the burden of the years cannot depress it, and love that is founded on it endures to the end.

peeled barley and an equal quantity of vetches moistened with ten eggs. Dry the mixture in the air, and let the whole be ground beneath the mill-stone worked by the patient ass. Pound the first horns that drop from the head of a lusty stag. Of this take one-sixth of a pound. Crush and pound the whole to a fine powder, and pass through a deep sieve. Add twelve narcissus bulbs which have been skinned, and pound the whole together vigorously in a marble mortar. There should also be added two ounces of gum and Tuscan spelt, and nine times as much honey. Any woman who smears her face with this cosmetic will make it brighter than her mirror.

Then make haste and bake pale lupins and windy beans. Of these take six pounds each and grind the whole in the mill. Add thereto white lead and the scum of ruddy nitre and Illyrian iris, which must be kneaded by young and sturdy arms. And when they are duly bruised, an ounce should be the proper weight. If you add the glutinous matter wherewith the Halcyon cements its nest, you will have a certain cure for spots and pimples. As for the dose, one ounce applied in two equal portions is what I prescribe. To bind the mixture and to make it easy of application, add some honey from the honeycombs of Attica.

Although incense is pleasing to the gods and soothes their wrath, it must not be kept exclusively for their altars. A mixture of incense and nitre is good for black-heads. Take four ounces of each. Add an ounce of gum from the bark of a tree, and a little cube of oily myrrh. Crush the whole together and pass through a sieve. Bind the resultant powder by mixing with honey. Some people recommend that fennel should be added to the myrrh; nine scruples of myrrh and five of fennel is the proportion. Add a handful of dried rose-leaves, some sal-ammoniac and male frankincense. Pour on barley-water, and let the weight of the sal-ammoniac and the incense equal the weight of the roses. After employing very few applications of this mixture, you will have a charming complexion.
